Who We Are

The Sarasota Classified/Teachers Association

The purpose of the Sarasota Classified/Teachers Association is to:

  • promote continuous improvement in instruction and all other student services of all kinds
  • encourage ethical practices and policies
  • eliminate all forms of bias based on race, religion, color, gender, age disability, sexual orientation, economic status, national origin, or social, political or economic status
  • protect the civil rights of all school employees
  • encourage public school employee involvement in community affairs
  • promote mutual assistance and cooperation among all public employee organizations
  • promote harmony, mutual respect, cooperation and understanding among the school district’s two bargaining units
  • enable members to speak with a common voice to the School Board, community and legal authorities, and
  • negotiate for good working wages and a good quality of work life on matters relating to wages, hours, and terms/conditions of employment.

Membership is open to any school district employee who subscribes to the above purposes, pays annual dues, and whose job does not primarily involve administration or supervisory duties for the public school district.

Three entities share in leadership of the SC/TA:

  • Officers, consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, elected for two-year terms by the SC/TA membership. Officers supervise and control SC/TA business under the direction of the Executive Committee and Board
  • Board of Directors (also known as the Representative Council), consisting of members elected for staggered two-year terms by their fellow members. The Board is the governing body of the SC/TA.
  • Executive Committee, consisting of all four Officers, plus Board members nominated by the membership for two-year terms. The Executive Committee represents the SC/TA in negotiations, approves appointments and expenditures, and suggests policies for consideration by the full Board.

The SC/TA also employs four staff members, whose jobs are to serve the needs of SC/TA’s Officers, Board, Executive Committee and membership.
